    So many great tips. I actually enjoy binding. (An I would not be able to quilt if I didn't glue basted). My sewing practices have evolved since I began quilting five years ago. Sharon Schambler's binding video was what I learned on. I always test out new methods which helps me evolve as a quilter--I'm going to have to try your corner pre-sew miter! I prefit my binding (glue baste it all the way around prior to sewing--to include the final join). The glue ensures that everything is right and tight. A hot hemmer works great for pressing the diagonal and the fold over for perfect crispness. (it is also superb for paper piecing folds). As you show, I think that folding and pressing the edge over is a better practice than trying to do it at the machine. I use 1/4" fusible tape which I like better than glue, but that is simply a preference. Preparing this ahead of time ensures that the only thing that you are focusing on is putting the needle in the right place. And I don't think that it makes any sense to do shortcut final joins (folding and tucking). It is a technique that requires more confidence than mastery. But once mastered confidently, your joins will be perfect every time. I have found that pre mitering my binding (and the final join) helps me have a better line of sight (as I am directionally challenged!). Thank you for your great demonstration.

    Did you mention which brand of ink you like?❤ thx!! Yesterday, i was looking for fabric binding tape to complete my project. Nothing matched. Then I remembered I had white cotton binding tape. I soaked it all in alcohol first. First time cause the cotton was too think. It just formed lines So I drenched i the whole thing in alcohol and saturated it in a dark blue. After letting it dry, there were shades of blue, purple, lavender wirh no defined pattern . I didn't lay it flat, so I accidentally allowed the liquid to drain or pool depending on how the tape was positioned. It matched my project perfectly, which had a similar shades. The original was inked, too. Now all I need to do these days is buy white tape!! :)

    For the metallic ink, how do you keep them from washing out or flaking off. Is there a 'fixative' or special technique? Maybe the material I'm using? Thx!! Less time consuming and messy than dies. Will experiment with combining ink and dyes one day, tho.

      The metallic paints that we have at creativefeet.com right now that are on closeout not because they're not great but because we're closing out all items other than create a feat brand products are wonderful. All of these work better on natural fibers and I heat them I hand washed one top for probably 10 washings and then finally threw it in the wash and the metallic remained.

      Yes. However, if the item isn't stretchy it will be difficult for tearing to occur.

    I tried to test mine by microwaving without anything in them but they caught on fire. could it because I didn't have anything (bowl or anything)in with it? I have done them before and even with dollar tree fabric. could it be because I had nothing but the bowl cozy or potato sack

    • @clare-rowley
      @clare-rowley 5 місяців тому

      The cotton batting the cotton fabric cotton thread are all flammable from the sugar in that plant. Cotton can also catch on fire just sitting there minding it's own business self-combusts the potato bags are notorious for catching on fire but it all comes down to what the microwave does is makes the molecules in fat water and sugar bounce around and they create Heat the heat then catches fire on the extremely flammable cotton fibers.

    • @clare-rowley
      @clare-rowley 5 місяців тому

      Also, only heat for 1.5 minutes at a time to allow the molecules to calm down.

  • @erindav1

    Prob one of the best tutorials but this whole process is a bit intimidating. I just printed out the pattern, cut the pieces and glued them to the fabric and sewed. What would the drawback to this be?

    • @clare-rowley
      @clare-rowley 5 місяців тому

      The needle becomes damaged when sewing through paper and then cuts the fabric fibers, weakening the quilt. If the quilt will only be a wall hanging, there's no reason not to sew through paper other than wasting paper and the time to remove it. It may seem as if this process takes longer, but it actually is faster once your brain is trained. Also, tearing the paper away weakens the stitching unless you're using a really thin paper. I hope this helps make sense as to why I worked to not see through the paper, and thanks for commenting! 😁
